Most of us are unprepared for the extensive damage that a fire can cause to our house and our lives. The damage created can turn our lives around suddenly and devastate our state of mind. thus, recovering from it is not always easy. Repairing the losses can be the last thing on your mind, and the hardest part is often where to begin. A house covered in soot, ashes, and smoke gives plenty of headaches; and starting on the path to recovery is often hectic and confusing. However, here are some tips you might find helpful if your house has been the victim of a fire.

What You Should Do?

The first thing that is to be taken care of is protecting oneself from further losses. You will want the site protected from further damage by weather, theft or vandalism. The site left unsecured, could result in further damage. This will require you board up all broken windows, tarp up all roof openings, secure all doors, tarp all personal belongings that may have been taken out by the fire department. This can be done by an insurance preferred company, however, if unavailable depending on the time of the fire you can contact a local restoration company to perform the emergency service also referred to as EMS.

Do not take anything from the house so that it may be documented by your insurance adjuster. After an item leaves your property it will be much harder to prove it was damaged due to fire. If it is absolutely necessary for you to remove it from the property, document it, take a picture of it at the site, a video recording will be best.

If there are any damaged goods, don’t throw them away. Let the insurance adjuster inspect the damage first.
Z
If you need to stay at a hotel, purchase food, clothing or other necessities after a fire, save the receipts and give to your adjuster for reimbursement.
Z
If you do not have the means of providing temporary housing, food, and clothing for you and your loved ones. You can contact your local disaster relief service such as the Red Cross.
Z
Let the fire department see if the utilities are safe to use or not. They will disconnect the unsafe ones before they leave the site. It is strongly advised that you not try to do a utility reconnection on your own.
Z
Make it a priority to locate valuable documents or records and safeguard them.

Following these tips will help you get started on the road to recovery. Although the full fire damage resolution might not happen quickly, your life will gradually return to normal.
